Applying psychological
principles to achieve positive
health behaviour change

What is Exercise Psychology?

Although many of us know that there are benefits to eating healthily and physical activity, it can sometimes still feel difficult to translate our intentions into action. This is where the field of Exercise Psychology comes in. Exercise psychology uses psychological principles to support individuals in making positive health behaviour changes and to develop a healthy and sustainable relationship with food and movement.

Working with an exercise psychologist might be helpful for you if you experience any of the following:

  • If you struggle to motivate yourself and maintain a consistent exercise routine and find yourself engaging in yo-yo dieting.
  • If you experience gym anxiety (worries, fear and stress related to working out in public settings e.g. the gym).
  • If you feel that your relationship with food and exercise has become unhealthy (e.g. over exercising/ disordered eating).
  • If you engage in physical activity but struggle with mental blocks that prevent you from reaching your full potential.
  • If you are a personal trainer/coach who would like to embed exercise psychology principles into their practice.

Understanding your brain – my process

01. Intake call (Free)

This short initial call will be about getting to know each other and establish expectations and goals. It’s a space for you to decide whether I might be a good fit for you and to see whether I can offer the support that is right for you.

02. Session A

This session is a chance for me to learn more about you and understand your needs. We may do this by talking, creating genograms and/or timelines. This information helps me to create a tailor-made intervention specifically for your needs.

03. Session B

During this session we will collaboratively put all the information that we have gathered about you into a ‘working model’ which can use help us to understand the challenges you are facing, where they might have originated from and what is keeping them going.

04. Intervention

Based on the previous sessions I will then create an intervention specific to your needs which we will work through in following sessions. Please note: The number of sessions will vary depending on individual needs.

05. In-between sessions

Outside of sessions can be a great opportunity to put what we have discussed in sessions into practice and to help you learn that you can use these skills on your own. Therefore, I may ask you to engage in tasks (e.g. practicing skills, keeping food/ physical activity diaries, practice implementing change etc.) that may be beneficial to you.

06. Final session(s)

During the final session we will come up with a ‘Therapy Blueprint’ which summarizes the work we have done together and can serve as a reminder to your future self about what you have learnt and found useful, so that you can maintain your progress moving forward and manage possible future challenges.
