How Exercise Boosts Productivity
Feeling sluggish and unproductive when it comes to work? Well movement could help combat this! We know from research that physical activity is a great way to not only support physical health, but also mental wellbeing and productivity. Throughout this blog post we’ll explore how adding movement into your routine could help boost your productivity.
It can increase our ability to stay focused and increase memory:
Do you ever find it hard to stay focused on the task at hand at work? Well research shows that engaging in regular physical activity can have a significant impact on our ability to stay focused and be productive (Coulson, Mckenna & Field; 2008). This is because movement causes blood to flow to the brain which can promote cell growth in an area of the brain called the hippocampus. This area of the brain is also responsible for retaining information. So, whether you’re preparing for a presentation or an exam, you’ll be able to retain and learn more easily if you engage in regular movement. Although it can be hard to prioritize this when our workload is high, even engaging in movement for a short amount of time can help improve our concentration levels.
Increases energy levels:
Research has shown that engaging in physical activity releases endorphins which can help improve our overall sense of wellbeing. Additionally, it can improve our heart health which means we have greater endurance throughout the day. Any type of physical activity that gets the heart rate up, the blood flowing and produces endorphins can help raise energy levels which in turn can support productivity.
Reduces stress:
Sometime work can feel overwhelming and cause stress and anxiety. Engaging in physical activity could be an additional tool to add to your toolbox to help manage this. Research has shown that physical activity can significantly reduce stress levels and improve our ability to manage anxiety (Childs & De Wit; 2014). This is because when we exercise, our brain releases endorphins, which act as natural stress relievers which promote feelings of relaxation and well-being. Additionally, engaging in regular exercise can help regulate our cortisol levels, a hormone associated with stress.
